PEJMAN – OPEN DOORS

Two years ago, a young lady brought us two big books
with hundreds of intriguing pictures and poems. They
were dated from 1986 to 2000. The artist himself, Pejman, was
born in 1982.

The list of his exhibitions all over the world was impressive.
A hype?
An old friend told us: I‘ve never trusted prodigious children.

Pejman lives in Nizza. We went there to see him and found
an outstanding painter, deep and intense who knows
what he is doing and why.

CELESTE BOLLACK – DA CAPO: BOLLACK CHEZ BOLLAG

In 2002 Céleste Bollack had her first show in our gallery. Our
mutual friend, the art dealer Georges Detais from Paris had
discovered this talented artist, one of many artists he has
promoted and bought from in his long career. (among many
others also Eduardo Arroyo) Céleste says: „For me, a day without
painting is a lost day. Voilà! It‘s my freedom!“ She is one of the
strongest painters of the new French generation of artists.

25 YEARS NOMADENSCHÄTZE

25 years –a mighty long time since we held our first exhibition
NOMADENSCHÄTZE in the prestigious Palace Hotel in Gstaad.
On show were a kirghiz yurt, Lakai embroideries, rugs, kilims,
jewellery as well as ikatcoats, then not yet popular.
Today, after many exhibitions and travels our love for
great kilims is as strong as ever.

MAREMONTI

How would it look if the gallery was filled with pictures artists have painted for an exhibition with a specific theme? Being curious, we asked artists we appreciate, if they felt like painting to MAREMONTI.
The word MAREMONTI –seandmountains – does not really exist in italian, if not as the name of a pasta of scampi with mushrooms. An easy task at first sight, treacherously complex if you start to be creative.

CABO VERDE – TCHALÊ FIGUEIRA Paintings, LADISLAV DREZDOVICZ Photo

Enchanted by the music of Cesaria Evora, we left for Cape Verde three years ago. A bad case of "sodade" lured us back there soon, and we stayed for one month. Most of the landscape is not green but looks like the back of the moon. The Capverdians reminded us of people of all continents at once, but their cuture is unique. We met the painter, poet and musician Tchalê Figueira in his atelier in Mindelo, and were impressed. The photographer Ladislav Drezdowicz, our common friend, is a magician with his Leica. He speaks the local creole language fluently. By showing Tchalês extraordinary paintings and Ladislavs striking photographies, we want to share our fascination by capverdian culture with you.

SAM SHAW - UNVARNISHED

Hollywood portraits from the 50s and 60s by Sam Shaw (1912-1999)
The world famous photograph showing Marilyn Monroe over the subway grate was shot by Sam Shaw during the making of the movie The Seven Year Itch in 1954. This iconic image as well as the close friendship between Sam Shaw and Marilyn Monroe stand at the beginning of Shaw’s carrier as Hollywood’s movie stars photographer. "He often liked to work without poses, make-up or glitz and encouraged the starts to have fun and improvise" (Larry Shaw / Sam Shaw Family Archive). Not only did he shoot some of the most famous Hollywood images, but he was also a pioneer of a new artistic style and technique that paved the way for independent filmaking working very closely with John Cassevettes.

ESSAI D'ACCROCHAGE A LA MAX

On December 6, 2003 Max G. Bollag will be 90 years old. In his honour, we are installing an ABUNDANT ACCROCHAGE à la MAX
(Approx. 500 people came to congratulate him on the opening night. Big joy.)
On show will be art from his own collection, works from the gallery of his late sister Suzanne Bollag, his father Léon Bollag, his artist friends from old times as well as art by artists we have selected ourselves now and which will be shown by us in future exhibitions.

JIM RATTENBURY – NEW PAINTINGS AND WALL SCULPTURES

Jim Rattenbury is equally intense as a painter and as a sculptor. His forms are a kind of metaphorical vocabulary – a visual language.
Jim Rattenbury's paintings and sculptures are truly multi-layered – in technique as well as in symbolical meaning.

JUDITH GLAUS - MIRRORED

Judith Glaus paints people in a way that reminds us of excellent black and white photography. These pictures are not portraits, they catch the essence of the person beyond the mere physical traits. Her paintings are both subtle and strong, her interpretation compassionate and lucid at the same time.

GRUPO LAM, CUBA: REALISM – SURREALISM

Grupo Lam, an independent group of Cuban artists
was founded in Matanzas, Cuba in 1994. Their name
is hommage to the famous Cuban painter Wilfredo Lam,
1902 – 1982. Grupo Lam are close to photorealism.
Their work concentrates on Cuban social and political
reality by using ambigious statements and symbols
familiar to all Cubans with a pronounced ironical touch.

MOVEMENT. FOR HUNTERS AND COLLECTORS

Before 1920 galleries looked very different from today.
No white walls with just one piece of art, but pictures
from floor to ceiling with hardly any space between them.
Berthe Weill, an old friend of Léon and Gustave Bollag
did it this way, and so did Max G. Bollag in the long years
he worked in his gallery. Once a year we shall revive
this charming but chaotic method of showing art.

CELESTE BOLLACK – BOLLACK CHEZ BOLLAG

Céleste Bollack is a discovery. The young French artist has a
powerful colour palette and paints her world both in a bold
and sensitive way. Earlier in her life, comics were a passion,
nowadays they often turn up in her paintings. She loves
great expressionist art. Some of its essence is visible in her
work, transformed and treated in her own very personal
way. Céleste Bollack is an artist to follow.

The Korolniks are big travellers and Morocco old hands
as well as internationally known specialists on Moroccon
textiles. This exhibition coincides with their show „Henna“
at the Bellerivemuseum in Zurich.
We show them as the brilliant artists they are.

SERGIO GALLI – MOSTLY SUNNY...

"Storefronts, anonymous motels, empty chairs, freeways,
cars... My canvases are dominated by their stark emptiness
and loneliness. ...I try to capture the atmosphere, that sharp
light which illuminates stillness. By focusing on the essential
simplicity of objects and scenery, I try to capture a facet of
American culture that has dominated my life, from cartoons to
popart, to photorealism."
Striking art work that goes beyong traditional photorealism.
by distilling the essence of a scene.
